Since several years, the civil society foundation CFCF has acted as a donor for a social schooling project in Bonao in Central Dominican Republic, located in the poor inland region of the DR not profiting from the international tourism of the island. Sponsored by a large scale tobacco company and their customers’ donations, this project targets poor families’ children with an integrated schooling project with some 300 pupils up to grade 12. The donors –mainly cigarcustomers from USA – have started visiting the school project in order to see where and how the donations are being spent. However, there are no commercial accommodations according to any international tourism standards available close to the project. Many of the visitors and donors stay in the best hotels of the city of Santiago (aprox 75 km from the project) where accommodation costs are usually high. The vision – and demand of the managing organization – is to create such a sustainable tourism village design for these visitors. This may at the same time function as a seed for a sustainable tourism development in the mountain central region of the Dominican Republic, thus the major objective of the team project is to develop a concept and design a small tourism village based on sustainability principles (‘Casamiga’).
This project is supported by the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation (CFCF) as major donor and the Instituto Dominicano de Desarrollo (IDDI) which as the project partner coordinates the schooling project on site. A location for the proposed tourism housing/village is already selected, however the land is not purchased yet.
